My Design Process
Research
DEEP UNDERSTANDING AND CONTEXT
My process is about gaining a deep level of understanding for the context of the design—what the business goals and visions are, what knowledge already exists in the space, and the key issues facing our users.
I utilize a wide array of methods to uncover as much insight as possible: user interviews, diary studies, academic research, questionnaires, data analysis, usability testing, and competitive analysis.
Getting to the root of the problem and understanding it is my favorite thing about the design process.
Strategy
ELEGANT SOLUTIONS FROM COMPLEX PROBLEMS
Once we’ve gained the necessary context through research, strategy is next.
I lead the way on the design direction through personas, user flows, and by conducting brainstorming sessions and design workshops.
It’s critical to achieve a general consensus with stakeholders, product leaders, and the entire team on what the key user problems we’re solving are, and what we believe our most promising approaches may be.
Design
CRAFTING BEAUTIFUL AND ENJOYABLE PRODUCTS
I refine the output of our discovery process and dive into creating sketches, wireframes, and prototypes.
Then, refinement through testing with higher-fidelity designs, and building consensus with the entire team and business.
And last, polishing the solution into an interface that is useful, usable, and enjoyable to experience.
Every problem has its own complexities, but my goal as a designer is to gain enough insight and work through enough solutions that the finished product makes it seem obvious and simple to solve.
